Abilash Panicker and Suresh Kumar are the directors-choreographers of Shuffle Dance and Fitness Studio, Chennai. They share their experience as dancers, teachers and also directors of the dance company.
What is the strength of the students in a class?
We have around 30 to 35 students.
What is their age group?
We have students of various age groups. Students belonging to the age group of 4-60 years attend our classes.
How long have you been dancing?
I have been dancing since my childhood as dance is my passion. After that I learnt dance for almost seven years.
Where and when did you begin your dance classes?
Both of us trained in Springboots Academy of Dance for seven years. Suresh learnt Salsa when he was in Dubai.
When did you begin this company?
I started the Shuffle Dance Company on October 17, 2010.
Do both of you coach the students together?
No, we allot time between ourselves. I come in the morning and Suresh comes in the evening.
What are the styles that you teach?
We teach hip-hop, jive, Salsa, bachata, jazz and rock and roll. In hip-hop, there are many styles. In addition, we are starting aerobics from the first week of February.
How many shows have you performed till now?
We have done around 50 to 100 college cultural shows and we have done two dance shows in Music Academy.
Who is your inspiration?
I learnt dance from Tamil choreographer Ashok Raja for two years. Michael Jackson would be any dancer’ inspiration.
Can you list your achievements till now?
We got first prize at VIT College in 2006 and before that we got first prize in Anna University in 2005. We have won prizes in MMC, MCC and IIT-Madras.
What are your plans?
Our immediate plan is to start aerobics classes.
Will you enter the film industry if you get a chance?
You will be surprised by my answer, but it is ‘definitely not’.
Who are your favourite dancers?
Oh, I have a list of favourite dancers. There are so many dancers I admire, like Prabhu Deva, Raju Sundaram, Mia Michaels…
