17th Edition of the Four Day Sundaram Finance Mylapore

Highlights include Puppet Shows, Tamil Plays and Traditional Dance Drama

 

Pulli Kolam, Kids Kolam, Rangoli this weekend on North Mada Street

Food Walks, Heritage Walks, Temple Walk and Traditional Games contest will be part of the festival

 

10000 Environment Friendly Cloth Bags will be handed out during the four days of the festival

 

  The 17th Edition of the four day Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival will take place between this Thursday and Sunday (Jan 10-13, 2019) around the Kapali Temple and at the Nageswara Rao Park. Around 40 events at a dozen venues will see presentations from around 400 artistes. The festival will see Mikeless Kutcheris at Nageswara Rao Park, Puppet Shows, Traditional Games, Kolam Contests for Kids and Adults,  Food Walks, Heritage Walks, Traditional Dance Drama and Folk Dance.

 

The Festival will kick off on Thursday morning at 7am with a Mikeless Group Kutcheri at the Nageswara Rao Park by 35 students from Sir Sivaswamy Kalalaya Sr. Sec School.

 

The events at the main stage in front of the 16 pillar mandapam opposite the Kapali Temple on Thursday and Friday evening include a Tamil play ‘Love Pannungo Sir’ based on Jeyakanthan's story and Bimbam based on R. Chudamani's story. On Saturday evening, Augusto Creations will present Tamil Play 'Nagammal Padasalai’ while on Sunday evening, artistes of Kanagasabai School of Bharatanatyam will present a dance drama ‘Thennadudaiya Sivane Potri’.

 

Puppet Show

The Puppet Show based on ‘Harischandra’ and ‘Sundara Kandam’ by Kuzhuvinar Tholpavai Koothu troupe from Nagercoil on Thursday and Friday evening starting at 830pm will be an event to watch out for.

 

Rajasthan Folk Dance

On Sunday evening, students of Sri Kanyaka Parameswari College for Women will present Rajasthani Folk Dance medley.

 

TT Srinivasaraghavan, MD, Sundaram Finance said, “Over the 16 years of the festival, we have expanded in terms of locations, events and participants. More importantly, the Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival has drawn several thousands of school and college students and that to us is very heartening. The festival is today an integral part of the Chennai Margazhi calendar, attracting a wide cross-section of people to savour the ‘Flavour of Madras’.”

 

Anchor Event –Pulli Kolam Contests 

The traditional Pulli Kolam contests on Saturday and Sunday evening at 3.45 pm on North Mada Street will be the anchor event of the four day festival and is expected to attract 200 participants from across the city.

 

Walks

For the food buffs, there will be a food walk on Friday and Saturday evening starting at 430pm from the Indian Bank on North Mada Street, anchored by Sridhar Venkataraman while for the heritage enthusiasts, there will be walks on the Heritage of  RK Salai (Sat morning) and the Heritage of RK Mutt Road (Sunday morning).

 

On Saturday morning at 8 am, there will be a walk based on the themeTrees of Nageswara Rao Park” exploring the trees at this popular park while on Sunday evening at 4.30 pm there will be a walk and a story session inside the Kapali temple on the Traditional Games in Temples.

 

On the highlights of this year’s festival, Vincent D’Souza, Director, Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival said, ‘Children and Youth have been an integral part of the festival over the last many years. We have created Children Specials this year with a Kids Kolam Contest, Pallankuzhi and Dayakattam contests, art and craft workshops and Traditional Games Mela. A new addition this year is the Rangoli Contest on the North Mada Street for the first time at the festival.’

 

1 Lakh Eco Friendly Cloth bags in 10 years

To discourage the use of plastic bags, Sundaram Finance has been handing out 10,000 environment friendly cloth bags with eco-friendly messages every year over the last 9 years during the festival.

 

S Sivakumar, Vice President, Sundaram Finance Ltd., said “This year, as a precursor to the Government ban, Sundaram Finance handed 1000 cloth bags to vendors and shopkeepers on the Mada Streets asking them to give it to their customers at the time of purchase to encourage the use of cloth bags. During the four days of the festival, we will be handing 10000 cloth bags with eco friendly messages thus taking the total cloth bags distributed over the last 10 years to 1 Lakh.”
