Madras Week at SOS village

The city has expanded in all directions and the suburbs, which are also a part of the bustling metropolis, are celebrating Madras Week in a grand manner.

The SOS children’s village (Tambaram) was established in 1979 to provide succour to children who had lost their parents. It celebrated Madras Week by organising an exhibition on Tambaram – past and present. It also traced the history of Madras, the important events and milestones and highlighted the present scenario of Chennai.

The present generation might not know about Madras of yesteryear. Thus, to make them catch a glimpse of old Madras, noted journalist Pradeep Chakravarthy spoke on “Your Ellu Thatha’s (great great grandfather) Madras”.

He dwelt at length and recounted several interesting incidents and personalities of old Madras.

The past section consisted of models of old railway station, Madras Christian College, St Thomas Mount church and old airport.

The present section comprised models of famous bridges, schools and colleges and pictures of present-day Tambaram.

Nambi Varadarajan, director, SOS children’s village, commended the efforts of the children who showcased their creativity by designing models and exhibiting their love for their city.

There are a lot of activities in store for the week like drawing competitions, oratorical contest on growth of Tambaram as part of Madras Week celebrations.
