They came seeking entertainment on a balmy Bhogi evening (January 14, 2012) at the Trade Fair organised on Island Grounds, Chennai, and went back enlightened. That was the audience reaction to the play staged by the Consumer Club of S D N B Vaishnav College for Women, Chromepet, that evening at 6 p.m.
The idea of the club was to spread awareness about the right kind of consumerism. They used the mode of a play to do this and conveyed the messages through a liberal sprinkling of humour. That was what made the play click.
The students – we had better call them actors – were in high spirits from early evening as it was an out-of-classroom event!
The play began with an introduction by the faculty of Consumer Club. The drama was staged for an hour and gave a lot of tips for the consumer.
The play taught people what were the drawbacks of buying local or unsealed products. The actors stressed the importance of checking the date of manufacture and date of expiry.
Since the language was colloquial Tamil, people began to connect with the play instantly. So, it was easy telling people what kind of products they should buy and how the customers should choose the products before they buy them. There was excellent response and appreciation from the audience.
R Vidhya played the part of a ghost, P Shakila acted as son-in-law and P Yasodha played the mother while N Yamini was her daughter. Annapurani acted as Chitraguptan, and Meena enacted the mother-in-law’s role. Shoba fitted in in the male role of father-in-law and it was left to Muthamil Arasi to play the anchor. Deepa was the doctor and Divya, her nurse.
The team came with the purpose of spreading awareness about being an informed consumer and that is what it achieved that evening.
