For the second year in a row, the team of T P Kurian and P Ramakumar from IIT Madras won the all-India inter-collegiate scrabble tournament finals organised by iGATE Patni at its campus in Bangalore recently.
The team from BITS Pilani was placed second. Rex D’Souza, president, Karnataka State Scrabble Association, presented the iGATE Patni trophy and Rs 70,000 to the IIT Madras team.
Colleges from Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, among other cities, had participated in the preliminary tourney last month. Twelve colleges, including BITS Pilani, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, Dr BVRIT College, Hyderabad, and Stella Maris, Chennai, made it to the one-day final.

Elated Kurian and Ramakumar said, “The iGATE Patni scrabble tourney has now become a prestigious tournament in India for college students. With the increasing popularity of scrabble and with double the number of teams in the finals this year, this win is especially pleasing as we had to encounter strong competition from other colleges. This tournament provides budding college students an opportunity and exposure to play alongside the top ranked scrabblers in the world who took part in the iGATE Patni international scrabble tournament.”
Srinivas Kandula, global head - HR, CEO, iGATE Patni, said, “Scrabble is known to be an intelligent and strategic mind game and has been a perfect fit with iGATE Patni’s culture of nurturing and encouraging intellectual growth. In the last two years, 75 colleges from across the country have participated in the iGATE Patni inter-collegiate tournament, an indication of the growing interest in scrabble in India."
For eight years, iGATE Patni has been organising the annual international scrabble tournament where some of the top-ranked word experts participate.
