How to beat the HEAT

In the poem ‘summer sun’, the poet and short story writer Robert Louis Stevenson describes the sun as follows:

Great is the sun, and wide he goes 
Through empty heaven with repose; 
And in the blue and glowing days 
More thick than rain he showers his rays

Whether we like it or not, the summer has come. When we hear the word summer, it is the ice- creams and cool drinks that will come to our mind. We also get reminded of the heat that will dry our brains. In spite of the bad heat, we can keep ourselves healthy by following these suggestions. First, we must avoid going out often, especially from 11 am-3am.


Many do the mistake of carrying black umbrellas. But this should be avoided as the black colour will only absorb the heat instead of deflecting it. One should carry a water bottle wherever they go. To avoid skin tan, tomato can be applied on the skin after coming from outside as it is the ‘natural sunscreen’ and it has no side effects. One of the main reasons for the increase in heat is deforestation. So trees should be planted in our surroundings as many as possible. Sunglasses can be used to protect our eyes from damage. Ice-cream and cool drinks should not be taken often as it will affect the thyroid gland. Doctors say that taking a lot of ice-creams will lead to osteoporosis. Instead curd can be taken both internally and can also be applied on the skin which will be of help. Coconut water and fruit juices are the healthy alternatives for cool drinks. The best thirst quencher is water and it’s better to avoid taking chill water as much as possible.


Buttermilk is also another healthy drink that will keep us hydrated.. Our body temperature  can be maintained by eating the fruits of the season and fruits that have water content. Taking foods that suit the season will also be of help.  Hot and spicy foods should be avoided as it will increase the heat in our body.  Full cotton clothes with light colours are the best summer wear. Staying in an air-conditioned place for a long time is not good for health. The best way to use the air conditioner is to switch it on for some time and put it off.
