Poompuhar festival fair

The month of Karthigai is not just the time for Deepavali and the festival of lights – Karthigai Deepam - but also for extravagant sales.

Exquisite, eye-catching articles, artefacts, dolls, leather items, bronze lamps of different sizes and finely carved wooden furniture lure buyers to the Poompuhar festival fair.

Tres chic fashion jewellery, in the form of earrings, bracelets and pendants, attract women and students.

Semi-precious stones like amethyst, cat’s eye. lapis lazuli, turquoise and jade, to name a few, are ensnaring. Leather handbags, purses, bags and slippers are elegant but priced a little high.

The bronze and terracotta lamps in different shapes and sizes are a connoisseur’s delight.

Is an exhibition complete without dolls?

It is dolls galore and I was reminded of Kolu. Dolls of vibrant hues and different shapes made us ponder about the material they were made of. Touching is believing so I had to feel and touch to know that they are made of papier mache and not clay.

I was astounded to see seers like Ramanujar and Vedanta Desikar who looked realistic.

Intricately carved wooden chairs, centre tables, tea tables, coats stand, key stands, sofas occupy pride of place.

Though the huge bronze lamps attracted us at the entrance, nothing was as enchanting as the artefacts and dolls.

It resembled a cultural and heritage house and is a shopper’s stop for gift-lovers.

The exhibition is on till 28th November.
