The annual college day was celebrated with verve by the students and staff of MOP Vaishnav College, Chennai.
The students raised a fund of Rs 10.11 lakh in the last academic year to promote the cause of underprivileged and pediatric cancer patients.
Presenting the annual report of the college on college day on March 13, 2011, principal, Dr K Nirmala Prasad said the students celebrated a year of Rights, Duties and Responsibilities and exhibited their concern for the less privileged by raising funds to promote their welfare.
The college sold handloom goods worth Rs 7 lakh as part of the ‘Kaitharikku Kaikoduppom’ initiative of the University of Madras. Through the Vaishnav Initiative for Social Help (VISH), students collected Rs 1.61 lakh for the underprivileged students of schools adopted by the college. A marathon emphasising the need for awareness on cancer and heart diseases was conducted and through which Rs 1.5 lakh was raised and donated to the paediatric cancer ward of Meenakshi Mission Hospital.
The chief guest for the college day was IAS officer Susan Mathew, additional chief secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu, and vice-chairperson, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. She addressed the gathering and distributed prizes to students who distinguished themselves in various fields. An awareness and enrollment drive for postal identity was conducted among students and the first card to the college was released on the occasion. Planet Earth, a research project, to create health and environmental awareness, received Rs 12 lakh grant from the Government of India.
The college theatre group Maquillage, in the very first year of its inception, created history by winning the national-level competition at Christ University, Bangalore, beating 160 teams. The college students also brought out bilingual newsletters and coordinated the eighth Chennai International Film Festival held in the city.
The college has 18 sports teams which have won 41 tournaments, including the prestigious Dr Sivanthi Adityan Trophy, A L Mudaliar Trophy, Madras University P. Haridas Rolling Trophy and VASPO overall rolling trophy consecutively for the past few years and collected 110 medals this year.
Three MOP NCC cadets had the proud privilege to pilot Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the Republic Day parade in Delhi.
