Guru Purnima falls this year on July 25. It is a very important day for Hindus and we all pay our respects to our gurus. Did you know that there are three gurus among the Gods? Lord Dattatreya is the master of the Vedas. Lord Shiva, in his form as Dakshinamoorthy, is the Universal Guru. But most interestingly, the guru of the Universal Guru is Lord Muruga or Karthikeya!
It so happened that once, due to a curse, Lord Dakshinamoorthy forgot the meaning of "OM". He requested his son Muruga to teach it to him. Lord Muruga accepted it on the condition that Shiva accepts him as his guru. Shiva agreed and Muguga then taught the knowledge of OM to Shiva!
Guru Purnima is also celebrated as the birthday of Ved Vyasa. Vyasa collected the incoherent Vedic hymns and divided them into four parts based on their uses and practices. Guru Purnima is also thus called Vyasa Purnima.
Praying to these gurus on that day will bestow knowledge and wisdom. It will set us on the right path.
