It is very interesting to know about the history of our place we live. The name of every place has been derived from a famous thing in that area .In the past the names of many towns and villages in Tamil Nadu had originated from the name of the presiding deity of the ancient temple of that place. The etymology of the name of the places we live is an interesting thing to know. The name of the places we live   shows the wealth of that place.

Kanyakumari district:

Kanyakumari is at the tip of   India. It got its name from Goddess Kumari Amman or the Kanyakumari Temple, which is situated at the shore on the union of the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. This temple’s main deity Kanya Devi, an avatar of Parvathi wished to marry Lord Shiva, but she was not able to marry him, so she vowed to remain virgin all her life. The princess Kanya Devi is a virgin goddess. So the name Kanyakumari has been derived due to the temple.

Thiruvanmiyur:

Tiruvanmiyur is the now the busiest place in the Chennai city. The name Tiruvanmiyur comes from the Ramayana author, Valmiki, living close to the Marundeeshwarar temple between 600 BC to 1000 BC. And so the name: Tiru- Valmiki-Ur. The name of Tiruvanmiyur arrived due to the Valmiki.

Villivakkam:

Villivakkam - Real name - Vilvaaranyam. The Villivakkam name has been derived due to the Shiva temple built by the Saint Agasthiyar. This place also had many Vilvam trees. So it got the name Vilva Aaranyam. As days pass by the name got changed into Villivakkam.

Parrys:

The name of the place arrived due to the merchant Thomas Parrys who estabished it as a trade center.

Perambur:

Due to the abundance of Pirambu trees in the locality, this place has been called as Perambur.

Sanatorium:

The name of the place Sanatorium came due to the TB hospital. This place in earlier times has been chosen for TB hospital because it was having good environment without any pollution to heal the patients, so the word Sanatorium was kept to this place.
