Chennai, Sept 2: Indian Administrative Service officer S Malathi has assumed charge as the 39th chief secretary of Tamil Nadu. She succeeds K S Sripathy who was chief secretary for two years.
Malathi hails from a town in the Cauvery delta and her maternal grandfather was renowned doctor A S Ramachandra Iyer who practised in T Nagar till his death.
Her father Swaminathan was a top brass in Indian Telephone Industries, Bangalore.
She belongs to an educated family with her sister being a leading gynaecologist and her brother, an engineer.
She obtained her masters in zoology from the University of Madras and began her career as an assistant collector, training, Trichy.
She held various posts as collector of north Arcot district, secretary of municipal administration and water supply, special commissioner of economic reforms and statistics, to name a few.
Malathi is the second woman to be appointed to this post, the first woman chief secretary being Lakshmi Pranesh.
