Puducherry: February 2nd
The opposition Congress here today announced a "massive rally" would be held here on February 6 to protest against the recent hike in the Value Added Tax (VAT) forced by the territorial government on various consumer commodities.
According to sources a large number of volunteers from different wings of the party, legislators, former ministers and others would take part in the rally.
The increase in VAT structure should be withdrawn as merchants were already reeling under the strain placed by the drop in the flow of tourists to Puducherry in the aftermath of the Thane cyclone according to reports .
The Puducherry government's recent hike in VAT on various commodities has been criticed by various political parties who have demanded its withdrawal.
