Chennai, August 25: Leaders of various political parties greeted actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth on the occasion of his 59th birthday.
Founder-president of the DMDK, he became the leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly after successfully facing the recent Assembly elections in the alliance of the AIADMK.
He is affectionately called 'Captain' by his party cadres who offered special prayers in temples and organised several welfare programmes for the poor.
The day is being celebrated as 'Poverty Eradication Day' by the party.
Vijayakanth offered special prayers at the famous Goddess Karumariamman Temple at Tiruverkadu at 6.30 a.m. along with his family. He also received birthday wishes from various political leaders across the state. Union Minister of Shipping G K Vasan, CPI leader D Pandian, CPM state secretary G Ramakrishnan, TNCC president K V Thangkabalu, Puthiya Thamizhagam leader K Krishnasamy, former Union ministers E V K S Elangovan and S Thirunavukkarasar also greeted him.
Several personalities from the film fraternity also wished him a long life.
